More speed on Vert

Hey so I just started the game and I am really surprised with how fun it is

The one thing I don’t really like is the airtime in vert. I don’t know if it’s a skill problem, but just trying to speed up in a half pipe doesnt really feel natural at all. It feels like a rubber band is dragging you down

Vert struggles a bit, but big air is definitely possible. I’m reliably hitting 3m of air on vert and my settings are 0 pump assist and 75% pump strength. Transition in general (ie. ramps that aren’t vert) works well too: carving and park skating is the best it’s ever been in the series.

Where the trouble lies is in a spotty pump detection and application, both of which seem to be affected by server load and client lag. That, and the game not explaining what the settings do or giving people an idea of how to tweak them to suit their playstyle. For example, if you are finding that there’s a rubber band dragging you back down, setting pump assist to 100 would help. And as you seem to be interested in vert, setting max pump to 100 would give you the big air you seem to want.

It's inconsistent, I just turned vert assist on full blas. So much funky stuff going on that I just don't care.

Yeah, lots of people report the same thing. In the absence of information to the contrary, how would you know whether it’s working or not?

What they ought to do is have an in depth pump tutorial, separate from the welcome missions, where it assesses pump ability and desired playstyle and then tweaks the settings on your behalf before telling you how to change them in future if you need/want to.

I don't know if the game can handle more speed on Vert. It seems like the level designers created everything with a height limit in mind. I keep getting so much air I hit the roofs on almost all indoor ramps.

Yeah, I agree. It’s a fairly realistic height cap, though it has been getting steadily higher and faster over time. It was perfect is 0.26, but the devs have been increasing the speed with every update since - arguably to the game’s detriment. It seems like they have tried to accommodate one section of the playerbase’s demands via broad brush changes to the mechanic, instead of explaining how it works in the first place.

The new changes to max pump speed have resolved this for me, though. I’m flitting between 70-75% with zero assist, and transition has a much smoother and more deliberate flow as a result. By contrast, 0.28 was fast to the point where I stopped skating transition entirely for a while. Even street lines were harder because pumping around banks was giving too much of a speed boost.
