It’s surprising that after all these years, and with skate culture influencing so many others, it still isn’t fully embraced in its authentic form. Anyone can go online and see what it’s really about — research is a core part of art direction — yet we keep ending up with this sterile, corporate-looking version instead.
Hardly anything about the new update gives off a 90s vibe. Honestly, I don’t think the character art style is the problem either. For example, look at Jet Set Radio — it shows that even a highly stylized approach can embody the essence of the late 90s and early 2000s — because the creators took the time to study the culture behind it.

I don't think the game needs to specifically focus on the 90s or 2000s. It can be a modern game focusing on modern skate culture, but that still means it's a subculture with fashions, styles, ways of speaking, art styles etc, all of which the game is utterly void of.

Season 1 allegedly has a 90s theme according to devs, I think that's what they were referring to.
Skate pass has nothing to do with the 90s, nor does the challenges or map. Music is mediocre at best, no proper "classics" like they spoke of from what I've heard.
