Hey there, I was experiencing the 216 error as well up until today. I found an interesting work around that I think you should try before giving up.
I followed all of the suggested solutions on this site before giving this a shot: Launch a single player match and finish it. For this, I used the battle scenario things. After I completed a match of those, I was able to connect online just fine.
