Battlefront 2 requires EA subscription?

Yes, we're way behind and playing old games....but, my son loved battlefront on ps4 so I got him battlefront 2 recently. Problem is we can't play anything. Every time we click on any part of the game it wants us to buy an EA subscription. Is that the only way to play?
