Also, from what I've gathered trying to play the same game with two different accounts on the same PC doesn't work so great. Have your kids tried launching from a different PC?
Since you bought from Steam, you always need to launch from the Steam launcher. Launching directly in the applications folder will be problematic.
Regarding help from EA...
You should be able to get to someone (including live chat) via this link. Availability of support options depends on where you are located and time of day - e.g. chat only available certain times.
