EA doesn't need Battlefront III – bring Battlefront II back as Battlefront

Battlefront II has been without new content for years, yet the community around it is still alive. Instead of rebuilding everything from scratch for Battlefront III, I think EA has a much lower-risk opportunity:

Bring Battlefront II back as simply STAR WARS Battlefront — update it for current platforms, expand it with a small amount of meaningful new content, and then let the players decide through their engagement whether it deserves continued support.

What I actually mean by a relaunch

I'm not suggesting that EA should build an entirely new game or invest Battlefront III levels of money from day one. Start with the game that already exists:

  • Bring Battlefront II natively to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, while keeping PC part of the ecosystem.
  • Introduce crossplay and cross-progression between platforms.
  • Add a proper Conquest mode built around large-scale, persistent control-point battles.
  • Add one new map as the centerpiece of the relaunch.
  • Add a selection of new appearances and cosmetics.
  • Then look at player numbers, engagement and sales before deciding how much further to invest.

I realize that crossplay in particular would require considerably more work than simply releasing native current-generation ports. Networking, matchmaking, parties, account systems and platform requirements make it anything but a simple switch to flip.

But I also think crossplay would be one of the most important investments in making a relaunch work. Instead of bringing an older multiplayer game back into several separate player pools, EA could reunite the existing Battlefront community while simultaneously introducing an entirely new audience on Nintendo Switch 2.

Why this could make sense for EA

The biggest advantage is simple: EA would not be starting from zero.

Battlefront II already has years of content behind it: maps, heroes, vehicles, modes, weapons, progression systems and visual assets. The core game is already there, and visually it still holds up remarkably well today.

That makes a relaunch fundamentally different from greenlighting a full Battlefront III. Instead of committing to another massive AAA production before knowing how much demand is still there, EA could make a smaller initial investment and use the relaunch itself as a market test.

If player numbers are modest, support can remain modest. If the relaunch performs well, add more maps, heroes, modes and cosmetics. And if it performs extremely well, EA has clear evidence that Battlefront deserves major long-term investment again.

There is also an audience Battlefront II never reached: Nintendo players.

A Nintendo Switch 2 version wouldn't simply be another upgrade for existing owners. For a large part of that audience, it would effectively be a new Battlefront release. It would also give EA a comparatively low-risk opportunity to test demand for larger Star Wars and shooter titles on Nintendo's new platform.

Don't spend Battlefront III money to find out whether people still want Battlefront. Use Battlefront II to find out first.

Why Conquest?

Battlefront II already came close to this idea with Supremacy, but I think there is room for something even simpler and more replayable: a true Battlefield-style Conquest mode.

  • Large maps
  • Multiple command posts
  • Tickets
  • Vehicles
  • Heroes
  • Reinforcements
  • No mandatory transition into a second phase

Just one continuous battle where both teams fight for control of the map until one side runs out of tickets.

That kind of mode would fit Battlefront almost perfectly because it lets the sandbox do the work. Every match can develop differently depending on which objectives are contested, where vehicles are concentrated, which heroes are active and how both teams move across the battlefield.

It would also give returning players something genuinely new without requiring EA to build an entirely new game around it. Many of the basic ingredients already exist inside Battlefront II: large environments, command posts, vehicles, AI soldiers, heroes and reinforcement units.

New content without repeating 2017

I don't think a relaunch would need a huge content drop.

One new large-scale map, a handful of new appearances and perhaps a few smaller additions could already be enough to show that Battlefront is genuinely alive again rather than simply being re-released.

From there, future content could scale with the returning player base.

And yes, I think there is room for monetization — just not the kind that damaged Battlefront II at launch.

  • No pay-to-win progression
  • No gameplay advantages behind purchases
  • No return to purchasable Star Cards

Instead, cosmetics could help fund continued support: character appearances, trooper armor variants, appropriate weapon cosmetics, emotes and themed cosmetic packs.

Maps, modes and other gameplay-relevant additions should ideally remain available to everyone so the player base — especially after introducing crossplay — isn't fragmented by paid map packs.

The basic idea is simple:

Players return → cosmetics generate revenue → EA funds more content → more players return.

If that cycle works, expand it. If it doesn't, EA has learned that without first funding an entire Battlefront III.

Why not Battlefront III?

Because I don't think the community necessarily needs a complete reset.

A new Battlefront III would almost certainly mean starting over again with:

  • Fewer maps
  • Fewer heroes
  • Fewer modes
  • Years of existing content left behind while a new game slowly rebuilds its library

Battlefront II already contains an enormous amount of Star Wars content across multiple eras. So instead of replacing it, why not build on it?

Rename it simply STAR WARS Battlefront, modernize it for current platforms, reconnect the community through crossplay and continue expanding it over time.

If the relaunch succeeds, Battlefront could eventually become something more valuable than a traditional sequel: a long-term Star Wars multiplayer platform.

New shows, movies and eras could feed into it over time. New maps, heroes, reinforcements and appearances could be added without abandoning everything that came before.

At that point, the question would no longer be:

"When are we getting Battlefront III?"

It would simply be:

"What's coming to Battlefront next?"

Would you come back?

I'm only one player, and obviously I can't speak for the entire Battlefront community. But I played Battlefront II for years, and I know I'm far from the only person who still misses what this game became.

Personally, I wouldn't need Battlefront III to come back.

Give me Battlefront II on current platforms, bring the player base together through crossplay, add a proper Conquest mode and show us that new content can happen again — and I'd be there.

I'd even buy it again.

So I'm genuinely curious:

  • Would you return to Battlefront II if EA relaunched it like this?
  • Would you buy a current-generation or Nintendo Switch 2 version?
  • Would one new map, Conquest and renewed support be enough to bring you back?
  • Would you rather see EA build on everything Battlefront II already has — or start from zero with Battlefront III?

If enough people still want this game, maybe the best way to find out isn't to spend years building its replacement.

Maybe it's simply to bring Battlefront back.
