Rey had Leia, and to a lesser extent, Luke to train her.
At least Rey had experience dueling with a stick/sword/staff. She is literally shown to have used a staff in combat. Luke, on the other hand, is shown to be able to drive a speeder. The Force does enter into the equation, but I would say that the skills of the person themselves are the greater priority.
I don’t think Luke developed much over the course of the OT. He learned how to use the Force, and became less whiny, but I don’t see much other than that.
Rey, on the other hand, has to come to terms with the fact that her parents were nobodies who didn’t want her, which takes a while for her to learn and accept. Then, in an unexpected plot twist that was totally a retcon, she is a Palpatine. She declines the offer, and becomes a Skywalker.
I’m not saying that Rey’s development is significantly better, but it is more fleshed out than Luke’s.
Yes, that would have been so much better for a storyline.
@Commander_Ney0A staff/stick is still a different weapon than a sword and is pretty much like Luke being able to hit that vent with ion torpedos because of rat sniping.
That's also why there were several fan posts before the release of Rise of Skywalker suggesting that it'd be great if Rey got a saber pike or double bladed lightsaber as seen in the concept art.

@TRlALON
It is the same basic concept of the weapons. Wielding a sword is very similar to wielding a staff. Yes, there are some differences, but if one is able to use a staff with proficiency, one is logically going to be able to use a sword with at least some skill. Still, there isn’t much of a chance Luke can send missiles down a tiny hole without any form of targeting assistance. Especially since he’s going, like, 100 miles per hour(probably more). Rey’s situation it much more plausible than Luke’s.But yes, giving Rey a pikestaff would have been awesome.

@Commander_Ney0Unless it feels similar for you personally I can hardly believe that. The maneuver layout and possibilities are too different and the exact use also depends from who exactly you engage. Sure, this might can give one a basic understanding in the other weapon's type, but to excel there's specific training needed. That "at least some skill" won't likely be enough to go up against someone who's specifically experienced with that weapon type, given that both use the same weapons.
There isn't much chance that anyone could send down missiles down that hole without target assistance I'd say. Especially when there doesn't even seem to be sight contact to the target to estimate the aim.
Luke had the force as "target assistance" just as Rey used it in her first duel against Kylo for a final push. The TFA film is a "hommage" everywhere anyways, so they're pretty even here.
I doubt that Luke's shot had much or anything to do with his skill level as pilot and Rey didn't fight unaided in several ways too. The force kinda explains everything here.Also it's Star Wars and probably pointless to discuss about logic in a serious way 😉
Anyways, there's a mod hat changes Rey's skin to resemble the concept art where she gets a black suit and a double-bladed lightsaber.
A pretty awesome mod and it would've been even better if this made it into the film instead of... a hommage to her original outfit.
