Very well explained, I agree it should be changed to CIS
Different from the Rebel Alliance, which itself used this name (but could be interpreted as derogatory)

The naming of the Rebel Alliance is an interesting one. Their official full name is the "Alliance to Restore the Republic", and they're different to the CIS because they were effectively a terrorist organisation within the Galactic Empire (a hard truth, sorry).
At a political level planetary systems did not leave the Empire to join the Rebel Alliance like they did with the CIS/Republic. The Rebel Alliance was exactly that, an alliance of resistance cell rebelling against the established galactic government body. They were not politically legitimate making the naming requirements much more flexible.
We have to remember that Star Wars is set "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" making it a recount of history. When we refer to in-universe factions and events we ought to do so like a historian would when writing about the history of Earth. If you were to read about the fall of the Roman Empire for example you would see reference to the Romans and the Goths/Scythians... not the Romans and the barbarians.
