Observations after 36 hours of play

TL;DR: BFII is only fun in single player and coop modes.

The Good:

1. Excellent graphics.

2. Cool customization system and options.

3. Lots of interesting game modes, including great single player options.

The Bad:

1. The multiplayer game modes are somehow very laggy. I play a LOT of games, and in my day job I'm a network engineer. None of my other games lag like this one does.

2. The matchmaking is poor. Can't put my finger on exactly what's wrong with it, but it's definitely not balanced.

3. Heroes in mass battle modes tend to ruin the experience rather than enhancing it. With aircraft, tanks, stationary gun emplacements and the wealth of character loadout options, I don't see the need for massively overpowering heroes to be involved in battles between soldiers. It just makes the game less fun both as the hero and as the soldier.

  • @scott2978The lag is absolutely real.

Matchmaking doesn't exist, same in Battlefield. Eat or die.

I think one thing to really improve hero play on greater maps would be to remove that giant and silly dot from the minimap and exchange it with the default minimap tracers that apply to soldiers. I mean come on, as soon as a lightsaber hero is involved in fighting, you'll see a glowstick, impossible to miss it.

Playing as Rey with her middle ability activated proves already that hero characters don't need much powerful juggernaut abilities to stay alive or to go on a rampage if they just wouldn't draw everyone's attention to them.

Or reduce hero HP a bit instead of nerfing abilities, I'd be cool with that too if I could just roam the map like everyone else as exchange.

  • @scott2978I do think co-op is the best way to experience the game. It's so much more immersive with the more targeted scenarios and wider variety of maps. Players can readily play heroes that are hard to come by in large modes. And you can play it offline! lol

I don't mind heroes in Supremacy. They are part of SW lore battles.  I think it would be odd not to have them, although I did enjoy the first ever Battlefront game back in 2004 which did not have heroes.. GA has too many choke points, so they dominate there. My issues with Supremacy is the maps. We only have 2 specifically designed for Supremacy...Felucia and Ajan Kloss. The rest are repurposed maps designed for GA and the Scarif port from Battlefront 2015. It shows too.

  • @scott2978, yeah as a shooter its average at best compared to most MP shooters imo. The terribly balanced modes mixed with heroes, then the awful ttk is bad especially when mixed with the insane health buffs,...it kill any skill and makes for spam in choke points a meta in GA. Then there’s the totally broken things like the Finn glitch that 99.9% is all premades use.

Problem is this game caters more to huge premades than individual players. Any skillbased gameplay is removed for spam, strength in numbers by the wrecking ball premade model. The compressed skillgap hurt the noobs more so than the better players imo. BFront15 was waaaaaaaaaaay better as infantry goes, more polished, and a lot more balanced.

Supremacy should have been the main mode imo, bots and lag are what kill it for me. The maps are more balanced and the lack of so many choke points is a huge plus.

@xProdicate  I think one thing BF II did right for the infantry classes compared to BF2015 was that we don't have these cheesy and op weapons and gadgets anymore and are either exclusive for Iden Versio or toned down and therefore not necessarily the meta anymore. So apart from the grenade spam on choke points it feels for me more that aim and main weapon play matters the most now and you can actually kill other soldiers when you outplay them tactically or with the better aim. No cheap things that allow people to just escape and heal anymore all the time or kill you just because they have the better loadout or use more roll exploits. More balanced? I don't think so. At least not if we're purely talking about soldier vs soldier.

I don't really experience team/clan stacks in Supremacy often, that's more a GA thing because many stacks want fast and easy games, no long matches. Just from my experience.

When we had such stacks on BF2015 however, the servers were emptying just as fast as in GA sometimes.

Especially when quite some of the clan stacks in the defender team considered it to be a big skill pro move to immediately rush with their jetpacks to the attacker spawn and farm everyone there once the match has started. *slow clapping*

Stacking always pulls hard on the balance lever.

Oh and the playerbase is really toxic, just as a side note. The few times I step into BF2015 again I immediately see the chatbox fully alive with people genuinely hating each other. Not even talking about how people in this game feel to invest so much more time in emoting someone.

It's hilarious in the beginning because I keep forgetting about these freakshows but later on just feels sad for me.

I wonder how I was even able to endure all this drama back when I played this game regularly.

I know we have a new trend of braindead "ez" comments going around in BF II right now, but in BF2015 the whole thing is just on a very different level.

  • @TRlALON I haven't touched BF2015 since I sold it after the Death Star DLC and shifted to TitanFall 2. lol

Mostly for the exact reasons you laid out. The Star Cards made me wonder if I was playing an Insomniac game like Ratchet and Clank vs a Star Wars Battlefront game lol. It was a balance nightmare since day one that got worse with every addition. By the time Bacta Bomb and the auto overheat star cards arrived, it was more about them than actual skill.

Then of course there was the completely OP pistols that dominated CQ like COD SMGs. DL-44 one-shotting people from day one. DH-17 with its insane fire rate, etc. Blast and other small modes were dominated by them.

Overall BF2 has far better class system and weapons balance. It was sorely needed. If they return to that Star Card nonsense, I likely won't be playing BF3.
  • @scott2978 I played some last night, and the servers were doing quite well.

I had a good Supremacy match on Geonosis. I forgot Geonosis is also an original map for Supremacy. They aren't using the areas for the GA map. Ironically it felt fresh since I hadn't played on Geonosis in a while. Originally it was the only map in Supremacy before they started brining over the GA maps. lol
