Re: Error 524 This account is not able to play online

This has been insane. I don't understand why all of this is so complicated... All we want to do is let our kids game and or play games with them....this song and dance is ridiculous. I've lost soo much time in the past 4 days dealing with this and my kids, forget it.... they wanna rock...I can't even log into their Origin/EA accounts...guess what, mine is apparently locked too... Credentials are expired??? But I was on an EA Account synced game ( NBA LIVE 18 )... I need answers...

all the reports with error 524 that I have seen so far were on Xbox accounts connected with underage EA accounts that can therefore not play online, due to restrictions on the EA account.

You can find some more information about online features accessible for underage accounts in this help article.

Since it came up before: Underage accounts do not have an email address you can log in with, you can only log in with their Origin ID to the Origin client. You will not be able to log on to the website of the forums. You can not manually age up the underage account. This is to prevent the aging up process being initiated by a minor. If you should have put in a wrong date of birth by accident, an EA Advisor should be able to assist you in that process.

Expired merely means the password is not correct with the mail address you typed in. As far as I'm aware accounts don't expire.

Downside of having too many accounts haha, I forget which password was for which account all the time as well.

My Kid is 13 and still no dice, they set up their own ea account, no idea how it has linked to the xbox one as kid has did it on a kindle (email address)??. 

The legal age differs per country. USA I think it's 13 but most countries in EU handle a higher age I think.

Best is to just get in contact with EA so they can tell you what's up. If he's old enough it could be the account has something set up wrong and that should be easily fixable!

Uk, according to the box and EA site 13 should be old enough for online servers...

OMG... what a nightmare... I waste over 2 hours chatting the EA support on this.... two major items...

1.  you must be 18yrs old to play......stupid and really stupid that you MUST PROVE TO EA using sensitive data....like picture ID and birth certificate....

2. If you are not the main Xbox account holder, you cannot play.... You cannot play if you are a sub-account player.

I honestly wasted over 2 hrs today to get this figured out...... end up getting a refund from Microsoft...

What a horrible experience.. I have to say that EA really dropped the ball on this title......

I'd have a call/chat then. Most likely it's something minor like the xbox account not having gold or something else isn't right like the DOB is set lower. Best way to find out is by contacting so they can look into it.

whenever you reset the password of an underage account, please do so using the Origin ID. Underage accounts only have a parental email where password reset emails and other communication is sent to. This email address however can NOT be used to log in with. Underage accounts can only log in with their Origin ID.

So to reset and login with an Underage account.

- Launch Origin

- Click on the "Forgot your password?" link

- Enter the ID of the underage account, click the checkbox to confirm you're no robot, click on "Send"

- Check the inbox of the connected parental email address

- Click the link in the email and set up a new password

- Sign in to the Origin client using the Origin ID and the new password

Note: Since the underage account does not have its own email address, you cannot log on to websites or the forums, only to the Origin client.

Madness as it is not an 18 game (not in the UK anyway). Thanks for the info, am now going to have to try and get a refund from where we bought it.

I have been on for a couple of hours with 2 sets of people on the EA side. I have hit a dead end with this. We bought the elite trooper edition from Costco and now my son is unable to play the game and we are not able to use the code on  my account..

It seems like my sons underage gamertag is associated with the parent email address. the first guy kept asking me to verify his email address and hung up on me saying the email address dont match with what they have on the EA account.. The thing is we didnt sign up for any EA account for him -- it seems like some sort of automatic Microsoft EA link.

The second guy asked me to provide legal documents that he is not underage -- and i had to tell him i wont be able to because he is still a minor!!  Then he asks for the code for the deluxe add on tells me that COSTCO might have given you a wrong code and they are not trusted retailer!!

I felt like the 2 people that were on trying to help didnt really understand what the issue is and how to fix it.. they are just a facade of EA trying to have some service..

I TRUST costco will take this back no problems!

Does your child have other games with EA? The first time they log in on an EA game it'll couple their gamertag/psn to that of their EA account. If that EA account is indeed underage they won't be able to use online functions till they become of age depending on the country.

That link you provided to EA's support for child accounts (https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/account/give-your-child-access-to-games-on-their-child-account/) is helpful.  But I find it to be misleading information from EA.  

EA implies that "child accounts" are a legal issue and that they are simply following the law.  But their implementation in Battlefront 2 doesn't do that.  

1) They are not looking at accountholder age in Xbox; they are simply using the child indicator.   There are many accounts that are designated "child" in Xbox that are above the COPPA age designation (13) in the US.  I'd guess most of Battlefront 2's target demo falls in that bucket.  My older son certainly does.

2) They are ignoring parental permissions in Xbox, despite EA's own guidance that parental permissions can be used to fix this.  You can set access to 15+ and set all your child account permissions as open, but Origin still won't recognize the child account as an online participant.  So EA is actively offering incorrect help on this, both online and through their call support.

3) They are ignoring game-level permissions in Battlefront 2 specifically.  FIFA 18, another EA title, shows up in Xbox with a game level exception so that child accounts can play the game without problems.  Battlefront 2 does not do this.

4) They certainly aren't offering refunds for the significant portion of online content that isn't accessible by the game's target audience.

The reasons for this are readily apparent in my view:  EA doesn't want the potential liability of minors playing Battlefront 2 while the loot box gambling accusations are still being kicked around by US regulators.  So they've just locked out everyone under 18, the legal age for gambling permissions in the US.  It's easy for EA, but it's a terrible indicator of the regard EA has for its customers.

I completely agree that EA isn't going to fix this anytime soon and that it is purposeful, not a bug.  Parents can of course set up pretend alternate adult accounts for their kids and access the Battlefront 2 online content.  But that is a challenge for pre-existing child accounts with substantial time investment, it cuts around Microsoft's parental permissions system which is actually of some value, and it's quasi-legal.  (That last is why I'm not posting how to do that here),

Does the issue resolve itself when the child turns 13? My son will be 13 in a couple of months, so he can probably wait that long to play. A little patience by him may be easier than all the changes it looks like we'll have to make so he can play the game on-line.

My son just turned 13 and still cannot play it.  My older son is 14 - so the same situation should apply - and he CAN play it.  Ridiculous situation.  The lack of action has all the feeling of a legal situation, that's the one thing that'll explain everything but it doesn't quite cover my older son.  It's made.  Make a new Xbox account that's an adult account and then it'll work, you'll lose Xbox achievements and it makes a mockery of the law.  Incredibly poor from EA.  I thought Square Enix were bad with fundamental issues in Rise of the Tomb Raider but this situation is ridiculous.

Not quite.  I have two children, one 14 who can play BF2 and one 13 who can't.
