As stated above, played a match of Starfighter Assault and "The Defender" milestone showed completion in the post-match summary. After exiting Starfighter Assault and going into the Career tab, The Defender shows 4/5 completion and the reward can't be collected. This also interferes with completion of the "A Tremendous Service" milestone.
finally got it after 4 times it had bugged
To complete the defender milestone, stay in the lobby and complete the match after it shows the milestone is awarded, and It will stick and you will be able to claim it in the career tab.
This is not ideal, but it works.
