Sorry to take so long to respond. I deleted the save data on the new console. I also cleared the MAC address. It still shuts the console down on the new console at the crate screen. I don't want to do this on the older console as I have everything done and don't want to re-do it. If you think it's necessary, I can back up to USB and try it. (I can play the game all day just fine, I just can't open a crate.)
I went to a friend's house to install on his consoles and test this weekend. He has both an older and new console. His Xbox One S does not have the issue. His launch Xbox One X (Project Scorpio Edition, if it matters), reboots at the very same place. There is a minor difference. His reboots and mine shuts off (requiring the power button be pressed to turn the console back on). Both come back on with the same thermal message. He is also not in the preview program.
He mainly plays sports games. He has never had BF2 installed before and said he has not had any other crashes. He does not have an external HDD. I will try testing different resolutions and HDR settings later this week to see if anything works.
Thanks!

Any success after making changes?

No, none of the setting changes that I tried seemed to fix the shutdown. Every Xbox One X I've tried shuts down, but the XBOX One S seems to work okay. Lower resolutions kill it quicker though, which again suggests it's the video card not being frame limited and overheating as it's rendering extremely high frame rates on the crate screen.
Like Fuzzbap, I'm just going to wait for the crates to go away now that I know they are being removed. I appreciate all the help EA_Blueberry!
Thanks!
