BD1 has completely disappeared. Can't access healing, map or other mechanics.

The sequence for me went as follows, on PC. I found BD 1 the first time without activating the elevator. While exploring the area BD 1 is in, the pit in front of his cage had an alcove that removing a power cell turned off the energy field. I assumed that that meant something, so jumped down there, and was stuck. I ended up killing myself by jumping into the pit repeatedly to I could respawn at the meditation point near the start of the sequence. When I turned on the power in the elevator room, I didn't even think about it, and when I stepped on the elevator platform, it activated, pulling me into the next sequence without my companion. I ended up finishing the arena without the droid, hoping that the game would just spawn bd1 with me at the end of the sequence when it forced the next cutscene, but to no avail.
