Can't switch target on train, using mouse and keyboard

i get to the part where it teaches you switching targets while on the train with storm troopers, using a mouse it says to click scroll wheel to target one of the enemies. I do that and i target the f...

I was able to do this holding the middle mouse and the flicking the mouse a bit... was a pain in the butt to understand what they meant which is also what brought me here

Nothing I do works. Hold the middle button, move the mouse left and right. Nothing happens. No one is selected. All it does is shift the view a few degrees to that direction. Stuck and I guess I have to return the game.
