Flight controls are garbage.

A real disappointment from an old X-Wing player. The default mapping is absurd, had to change yaw to roll and in the middle of a tutorial it prompts me to hit something like the 8 stick button, instead of displaying the alternate kb input. Brilliant! And even setting sensitivities to 100% still feels so sluggish I am convinced NONE of these developers played ANY of the original X-Wing/TIE games. And why in Cthulu's name can I not dual fire proton torps?!? For a real dogfighting experience I'll still be playing World of Warplanes. And Episode 1 sounds in an Episode 4-5ish game?!!? No respect for the original trilogy at all it seems, just more pandering. This is what happens when they force you to play with consolde kiddies and their cute little controllers who in 30 years will have significant arthritus.

  • They messed up the deadzone so you have to use virtual joystick remappings to fix it.  Or otherwise you have to wait for them to fix it in a patch

As a huge X-wing / Tie-fighter fan of the series (owning the original cd's and om GOG) i really hoped i could play it as i play(ed) those games.

The older games i played with a flightstick and used all commands on keyboard. For most part this works.

Except when i press a button on my keyboard, it stops my flightstick from functioning. Not really noticable when you just press a button, but when holding boost, or throttling up i can't steer. I have to let go of the keyboard key in order to ave my flightstick funtion again.

And the dead zone feels clunky.

I hope something will be patched.

  • The tool tips on screen represent the latest input from any controller and they update immediately when you e.g. press the mouse button. As such when it tells you to press joystick button 24 (while you might only have 8) just press the left mouse button and it will immediately tell you what to press on the keyboard instead. Not ideal but a work around

  • It's not over-steering. It's the rotational momentum which needs to get countered first

In the original games left/right stick would indeed yaw the ship, while holding the roll button (or using twist stick) would roll. This was hardcoded. In 2020 with a HOTAS I agree that it's a bit jarring and I use my pedals for yaw instead.

I don't think they will ever fix the animation as it is in-universe correct. I've not seen the pilot use pedals at all, his/her feet just sit there. Rolling is more of a "cool" thing in Star Wars and all ships seem to be facing the same way up. Space also doesn't behave like space. Well, except in The Last Jedi... But let's not bring that travesty into this.

Deadzones are a problem, though on my stick I only seem to have about 5-10% and it's quite playable. Pedals have no deadzone.

    MSFFB2 (with simFFB)

    X52 Pro (throttle only)

    MFG Crosswind v1

P.S. I would love to get some rumble on my FFB stick.

Sure EA knows better, but they just want our nostalgia money. I waited for the reviews hit before I bought this game, and guess what all the reviews say its AMAZING and STELLAR! But all the players on this forums seem to think the game is OKAY and NEEDS MAJOR IMPROVEMENT! Should have known to check the game forum before buying! Last time I trust a review on Polygon, IGN, and other sites.
