Pretty much the same happened to me.
I was able to finish the mission, but before the Final Cutscene loads, the game crashes to desktop.
After reloading the game several times, the game crashed already from just loading the mission.
Turning Volumetric Fog to Low fixed the issue.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to find a workaround to this. Even lowering vol to med or low and I am still having CTD issues. My most common CTD occurs as I am trying to launch the game, sometimes I have to try to launch the game 4 or 5 times in a row just to be able to access the settings. My second most common CTD occurs when playing the fleet battle tutorial. I'll get to either the x-wing launching into space and CTD or I will CTD immediately after completing on objective. This also occurred a few times in mission 1 and mission 2, usually right after a check point. I have lowered all graphic settings to low and run in windowed mode and still the CTD occurs, regardless on whether I reboot or not. I have also verified game files, disable all game overlays from discord, steam, and nvidia, I have up to date graphics drivers. I have run steam as administrator, and still the CTD occurs. Windows is also updated.
This is not an issue on my end. It is a software issue. Here are my specs:
