I also started on the arcade game in 1983. (I'm so old...)
I followed up with X-WIng on PC. Switching shields, balancing power, transferring from lasers to shields...the Battlefront series felt like a * arcade button-masher in comparison.
I know this level of complication is not possible in this game, given the limitation of console controls. There were a lot of scenarios where a near-perfect job of managing all the systems was the only way you'd succeed. As clunky as it looked, it made you feel like you were flying a real starfighter. That was lost in the console-friendly versions of the last decade or so.
