In-game voice chat on Playstation turns crackly after a while

Product: Star Wars: Squadrons
Platform:PlayStation 5
Please specify your platform model. Sony PlayStation 4 Pro
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? MunkieBrains
Are you playing in VR? Yes
Which VR Platform are you using? PlayStation VR
Which part of the game is the issue happening in? Other
Please explain 'Other' All game modes
What were you doing when the bug occurred? Step by Step detail is helpful. Speaking to other players who have joined my game session or vice-versa. We are using the in-game voice chat feature (not Playstation voice chat) so this is using Squadrons for this feature, not Playstation. I personally am using the mic built into the PSVR headset.
Where did this issue occur? Please include menu name or in game location. All game modes: Both playing the game and also voice chatting in the main menu.
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) 09.02.21 13:00
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
How severe is your issue? Can play, but it's highly frustrating
What happens when the bug occurs? When teamed up with other friend players (cross-play cooperative internet play), we all use our voice microphones. The voice chat works fine for a few rounds of the Fleet Battles mode, and the other players report that my voice sounds very good and high quality. But invariably, after a few rounds, the other players in the game session complain that my voice suddenly became distorted, crackling, and robotic. I have tried turning the PSVR headset off and back on again, but this does not fix the problem. What works to fix the problem is to exit the game, reboot the PS5, and rejoin my friends' session. Then the voice will work fine (for a while) again. I have not yet tried merely exiting the Squadrons game and re-entering the game.
What do you expect to see? I expect the voice to work consistently and not turn crackly after a few rounds of the game.
Which ship were you playing? If not applicable, just answer "no" or "none." None
What components were you using? All (unrelated to ship loadout).
Which customizations (if any) were you using? None

Since the voice crackling is solved by rebooting the PS5, it is not a problem with the household internet connection. All other players have good-sounding voices.

When the issue occurred for me, someone in one of the game sessions said it's a specific known problem with the Playstation version of Squadrons, they've heard it happen with other playstation players, and that most playstation players eventually encounter it, and the workaround is the reboot. I don't think players on XBox console or PC encounter this problem, though I'm not sure.

  • This issue is continuing to occur. Can it be fixed?

    New information I have:

    - Only occurs on Playstation platform. I have not seen the issue occurring to Xbox or PC players.

    - Occurs to all players on the Playstation platform eventually. I have heard this happen to every other Playstation platform player I've ever teamed up with. Everyone I've spoken to agrees that this happens to Playstation players.

    - Might not be specific to PSVR, though that is how I experience it because that is the platform I use.

    - Occurs after you have been in-game for a while, for example, after you have played several Fleet Battles.

    - Occurs randomly, but once it occurs, it stays broken, it does not self-correct. The longer you are online and playing Fleet Battles, the more chance it will occur.

    - All other players using in-game voice chat hear the problem. They start to complain, saying things like "your voice is breaking up again", "you sound like a Cylon again", etc. It's usually bad enough for the other players to mute you.

    - The problem is audible to all other players in the voice chat, regardless of the platform they're on. The issue originates on the playstation player's outgoing voice stream.

    - The problem is not audible to the player who's having the problem, only the other players in the same in-game voice channel will hear it.

    - There is no audio problem with the Playstation itself. When the problem occurred, I tested it by using the playstation to record a separate voice message (outside of the game) and it sounded fine.

    - Therefore the problem is only with the Squadrons in-game audio stream, not with Playstation itself.

    - Restarting the game temporarily clears the problem until it recurs.

@MunkieBrainsHave you got this fixed? I have same problem on PS5 while playing Battlefield2042. Audio is ok for max of 1hr and then voice chat+game audio starts to crackle and cut out + tearing audio.

Allthough my problem happens without psvr.

  • The issue that I described is for Squadrons players only. This is not related to BF2042. The only workaround is to close the game and reopen the game. There is no fix because EA is not allowing the dev team to do any more client side fixes for the game.
