No support for DLSS

Product: Star Wars: Squadrons
Platform:PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? CA1-PAINLESS
Are you playing in VR? Yes
Which VR Platform are you using? Other
Please explain 'Other' HP Reverb G2
Which part of the game is the issue happening in? Fleet Battles
What were you doing when the bug occurred? Step by Step detail is helpful. When playing in VR, in high resolution on the HPrevdrb G2, even with a 3090, it is very difficult to maintain 90 htz, and still have goodVisual fidelity. The game could bennefit greatly from Nvidia's DLSS, which now has VR support. This would drastically improve performance on higher end GPU's, especially in VR.
Where did this issue occur? Please include menu name or in game location. See above
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) 01/08/2021
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
How severe is your issue? Can play, but it's highly frustrating
What happens when the bug occurs? Without DLSS, i have to run the VR resolution scaling way down in order to maintain 90htz, even on a 3090.
What do you expect to see? Woth DLSS enabled, we wpuld be able to run the gsme in a higher resolution scaling.
Which ship were you playing? If not applicable, just answer "no" or "none." Awing
What components were you using? Na
Which customizations (if any) were you using? Na

Please see above

  • Agreed, having the option to turn on DLSS would be wonderful, especially for VR but in general as well.

Until then, I suggest setting the Reverb G2 to 60Hz when playing the game, I'm able to run the game at 100% Super Sampling/Resolution Scale VR and mostly Ultra/High details (I have to set Volumetrics VR down to Medium to avoid VR crashes on the Yavin map, but that's a different bug)  with my 3090 with motion smoothing off (except for dropped frames and stutter at times because of the Nvidia driver VR Bug - with older driver, my old RTX 2080 Ti runs the game way better than my RTX 3090 on any drivers that work with it, though). It feels better at 60Hz at full resolution and high details than 90Hz at lower supersampling and detail settings, at least for me. It might cause a bit more strain to your eyes using 60Hz, though, especially if you have eyes that are sensitive to flicker. I wish the G2 had support for 72Hz as well, which would probably be the sweet spot.

@Cave_Waverider . Thanks for the response .When you say you run the game at 100 % supersampling, which setting are you talking about? The Resolution scaling in Steam VR? Or the VR resolution scaling in the game?

    I'm at:

    10700k / EVGA 3090 FTW

    HP Reverb G2  4k-VR

    -90htz/90fps

-"48" Steam VR resolution scaling setting (This sets it as close to the native 4k G2 Resolution of 2160 x 2160 as I can get it. I find it work best when staying close to native as possible.

    - In-game resolution scaler to 99 percent.

    -"high" graphics preset.

    - v-synch on

I use the graphically intensive training map to test and look for dropped frames. And it good for 90 at these setting 99.9 percent.

I will try your 60htz suggestion. TY.

@Cave_WaveriderI had a chance to test the change from 90 down to 60htz. Here are my results.

    10700k / EVGA 3090 FTW

    HP Reverb G2 4k-VR

    -90htz/90fps (Changed to 60htz/60fps)

    - was"48" Steam VR resolution >> Now set to "50"

    - In-game resolution was 99 percent. >> Now set to "125"

-was on "high" graphics preset. >> Now set to "Ultra"

    - v-synch on

And its even smoother now..Thank you, this really worked!

Now, its not without its drawbacks, as I was getting eye strain with the 60htz.. But I'm just happy to finally get some decent Resolution and performance!

  • I'm glad it helped. And yes, unfortunately 60Hz could cause eye strain, depending on ho sensitive your eyes are.

With Supersampling I meant 100% in SteamVR, but I also run 100% in-game as that's the clearest. With 90Hz I have to lower the resolution in SteamVR to around 58-60% to get similar performance with my 9900K/RTX 3090 Strix.

By the way, if you want to get more performance out of the VR headset, Disable the preview in WMR (Stop/play button in the WMR Window), set the non-VR settings of Squadrons to Windowed and Lowest Quality and minimze all Windows on the Desktop. Decreasing Desktop resolution before playing to as low as possible can also yield a few FPS.
Also, if you haven't already, you can go to your registry and to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Holographic\ and create a D-Word (32-bit) Value named PreallocateVirtualMonitors and set that to 0, then restart the system. This will get rid of the three virtual monitors WMR assigns by default and can yield a lot of performance with WMR headsets overall. Also, in SteamVR Settings under General, turn SteamVR Home Off to gain performance, especially on RTX 3xxx Series cards.

By the way, 100% Resolution in SteamVR (3172x3096 per eye) is actually the resolution you should use for native quality for the Reverb G2, even though it's displays are 2160x2160 pixels. Everything else will display a quality below native resolution. VR Headsets need the video card to render a higher resolution than their native panel resolution(s) to be able to make up for the distortion created by the lenses. Thus the video card needs to render almost "7K" resolution to feed the Reverb G2 "natively".

By the way, the most intense Squadrons map to test seems to be Galitan, especially with lots of action going on inside the Asteroids with lots of sunrays visible and casting shadows.

I have also noticed that minimizing the app in windows increases the performance. I will try your tip about the screen res tomorrow night

my eyes still hurt a bit from last nights 60htz  experiment. But it was worth it. Glorious!
