On train hanging from the pole

So I am at the point where I shim across the pole and the side of the train breaks open and the pole goes outside of the train and I am hanging from it.  On the videos I have watched there is a broken platform that is above where I am hanging and they jump up on to it.  However when I play there is NOTHING to jump up to.  Its open air.  So I cannot progress any further on the game.  Was I supposed to do something earlier in the game?  I restarted from the beginning and it still happens.  Any thoughts would be welcome.
