This is my fix that worked for me, it may not apply to you. I was running a non-legit copy of windows, I had a real copy that I had laying around I never got around to installing. I installed a new copy of windows and updated to Service Pack 1. By upgrading to SP1 I was able to installed the latest drivers for my video card without my desktop windows manager crashing. After that the game loads up perfectly fine for me. Like I said earlier this is how I got it to work and this may not work for you.
