I think they copied the idea from Elite dangerous. Apparently if you master it, it is so much more precise (I've seen E:D streams where they do absolute magic using this type of mouse control) but I agree that if you haven't, it's really really difficult and unintuitive.
The advantage is that you can stay in a constant turn using your mouse this way, something that you would not have been able when using mouse in the original x-wing tie fighter games (you constantly had to lift up the mouse, reposition and move again). In multi-player it's absolutely necessary to allow mouse players to be competitive with flight stick and game-pad players.
It would be good if it could at least get toggled for the casual gamers that have no ambition to be super competitive in multi-player.

People overrate the advantages of hotas, if any at all. I have seen posts of hotas players who say the same against kbm/controller players. I’m a hotas player, and I keep getting owned by kbm players it’s frustrating. You guys have such an advantage in accuracy it’s no contest who’s in the short end of the stick here. I’ve played plenty of hotas games and kbm always wins. Always.
- 5 years ago@AHungryCello doesn't help that most HOTAS sticks are crippled right now with 20+%deadzone issues that can't be fixed without using 3rd party software and remapping instructions that take 30 minutes to implement.
I REALLY want to enjoy my HOTAS but i feel like im getting a GREAT forearm workout gripping my flight stick and fighting it to keep it from oversteering constantly.
-set the resistance on my joystick as light as possible so i don't have to push hard on it for inputs
-set sensitivity to 100% / deadzones to 0%
unless im flying at 20-30% thrust, there is no way i can bring my gunsights onto a moving target where i didn't have that issue with the Xbox Controller. The only reason i dont want to use the Xbox controller is button mappings/amount of buttons/thrust control/accidentally clicking boost constantly when i didn't want it.
Because i've felt the diff between the controller vs hotas deadzones, i know for a fact this issue is one of the big keys to my overwhelming frustrations and rage inducements in game.- 5 years ago
It's absolutely laughable that people are calling this game a "flight simulator". It is, hands down, 100% not a flight simulator. Not only is everything in the game fictional, but to think that an actual space ship could be controlled with ONLY what's available on a gamepad is completely ludicrous. Educate yourself on how many buttons and controls Microsoft Flight Simulator requires. Please stop calling this a flight simulator and using it as an excuse to nerf a playstyle.
