Re: How do I get the game to use my HOTAS?

After troubleshooting this further I found that Xbox 360 elite controller is detected but non of my joysticks.  Found the culprit though.  You need to turn off "Generic Gamepad Configuration Support" in Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings.

Here:

Ensure you UNTICK Generic Gamepad Configuration Support, then exit out and reconnect your HOTAS.  Restart the game and go to options -> controls and scroll down to the bottom of the list and you should see your HOTAS listed there like here:

Sorry had to repost this as the first post failed.  Anyway, this bug should not have gotten past QA but anyway, it did and this fix solved my issue.  Hope it helps you and others out.

Good Hunting.

  • Mine was already switched off so unfortunately this is not a valid workaround for everyone

  • @chrustec How do you even get to that screen? Under my controls, I only have Keyboard/Mouse & Controller sections. No joystick despite it being plugged in and working.

I did try disabling that Generic Gamepad Config thing, but it was already disabled for me.

@PDXLAN_JMan Yeah that screen wont show if the game is not seeing the joysticks. I was not 100% sure my fix would work for everyone but it was a start. Try plugging in a 360 controller if you have one or other gamepad to see if it picks up a controller either - this is different to hotas/joystick. Also try verifying your game files as well just in case something else is screwy. Also try unticking other gamepad options - it does appear to be something to do with the way steam translates controllers to the games via steam controller support. Also which HOTAS sticks do you have? make sure that firmware is updated on them as well. Also go into the steam controllers section with your joysticks connected to see if they display if they dont then there is other issues at play.
  • I realize you were replying to the other user but in interest of keeping discussion going on the issue:

Using the origin version so whatever the steam problems are shouldn't be affecting me.

Drivers/Firmware up to date. Have verified game files.

Using a Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle + T.16000M flight stick

Xbox controller works w/ no issues.

  • Also using Origin version, with no recognition of throttle.

Has there been any official response about HOTAS support?

HOTAS is supposed to be fully supported and mine in particular is listed compatible - bummer.

All my friends are deep in it, I've lost like 95% of the hype just due to missing out on all the day 1-2 fun. Might ask for a refund tbh. Kind of ridiculous something this gamebreaking slipped past QA (or lack thereof).

Edit: Went ahead and refunded - will think about getting the Steam version (maybe - since its full of problems too people say).

  • @khilendel Steam users can disable the control layer per game by adjust the settings within steam.

That said, I'm also having issues having the game detecting one of my VKB GF3s and my MFG CWv2s.

Ill give it a shot @Lobstar911

Bummed im now missing all the preorder bonuses, but I guess that's the price I'll pay to work around this broken game.

  • guys, if SWS doesn't see one of your peripherals, use joystick gremlin to force the game to see your vjoy device.

The game wouldn't see my rudder pedals because steam doesn't see them either, and using joystick gremlin fixed the issue!

I almost asked for a refund as well, as in 2020 you shouldn't have to do this, but this is actually not too bad of a fix.

  • Update: Same problem on Steam. Tried with Steam controls forced on and off.

I would wait for a fix but don't want to risk losing my refund rights while the community is skilling up, so I guess this game ain't for me.

Appreciate your help @Lobstar911 and other posters here - EA, I hope you do right by those who choose to wait for a fix.

  • @khilendel the funny thing is, even if steam doesn't see your peripheral, games that run with Steam like DCS, IL-2 or MSFS2020 will still be able to "see" them. SWS can't for some reason.
  • @Sybreed_5 That's the frustrating thing in my case... Steam even sees the throttle and stick just fine! They show up in big picture settings correctly and everything (as well as working with fs2020 and elite dangerous) - it's only squadrons that doesn't work

Was disappointed to see they focused their efforts on fixing VR instead of game breaking stuff like this. Looks like folks will be waiting a week to use their peripherals. Wonder how many will quit/refund...

Most fun time to learn a game is week 1 along with everyone. That's ruined now.

  • I would ask for a refund but I am at the tail end of my EA pro subscription or whatever on Origin. If this game doesnt work with my HOTAS, then I have no reason to keep that subscription. Easy decision.

FIX THIS-do we know if they are at least looking at this?

    Reposting my issue with details.

I too am having similar issues. Playing through Origin, using Thrustmaster 4 where is all connected to 1 USB cable, and the throttle doesnt work, but the joystick does. I have tried every combination of settings in the Thrustmaster utility etc. I have rebooted the game after each change.

Verified drivers are most current on stick and software.

Checked that it works in MS Flight Sim/DCS just fine

Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 (only has 1 USB cord to connect/disconnect)

THROTTLE --> NOT working (but buttons on throttle do? wtf)

    STICK---------->Wokring

I have been in this thread for quite a while. Did something update that I am missing? Did you mean a different thread?

No reason to be a *.

Oh I see...you are referring to the pictures on page 1 that has absolutely nothing to do with my issue that I posted. Maybe try reading the whole thread 🙂

@SuperChadMonkey Hi. I see you're having trouble with your Hotas. You can check out my threads on getting it to work. I won't repeat all the details here - I'd just be duplicating it but here's the lowdown.

SW:S can only see 4 HID devices and it filters them based on if they have an X axis - if they don't - it won't show them and you can't use them.

    Some HID devices break SW:S - i.e. Thrustmaster Cougar MFD's (#2 specifically).

You have to unplug all usb hid devices and controllers from your PC except stick, throttle and rudders.

If your rudders don't have an x axis, you have to get their firmware updated to fake it - see my VKB fix.

You can (as I did) buy a 10port switchable usb hub to make this simpler when moving from flight sims to SW:S.

Also, as I just said to someone else, if it grabs your throttle as the first device it can break your mouse and never let you get it back. Way to get around that is hold down the right mouse button and change the first flight device to something other than your throttle and then it works.

PM me if you need more help.
  • That level of fix is insane, and I am not sure it applies to me either. I only have 2 USB devices plugged in (Mouse and KB) and my stick/throttle is only 1 other USB connection as well (T.Flight HOTAS 4). I have never tried to add any other devices, and from the sound of it, extra items make it worse.

How on earth can a AAA title be released with this level of user manipulation to get their primary advertised control system to function as designed? I have no other issues with MS Flight simulator or DCS world, which means this is their game specifically.

At this point I have let my pro EA subscription expire and have no intention of starting it back up until this issue is fixed. I have started in on Red Dead 2 to fill my time.

In short-I'm out until they fix the game. Make no mistake, the game is broken, not the users.

I can't get my HOTAS working properly in the game. I own a Virpil stick, throttle and rudder pedals. Windows recognizes all three and so does DCS where they work perfectly.

I map functions to buttons and then try to fly and use them in game and some of them like pitch down don't work at all. (I can pull back on the stick and the nose comes up, push forward to push the nose down and nothing happens and yes, I mapped both functions). Others, when I press the assigned button do something entirely different. (I have a template I made for my HOTAS and I have every button I've mapped in game on this template.)

My mouse won't work unless I hold down the right button, why, I have no idea but it's dumber than frozen crap in February. (I discovered this purely by accident.)

And unless I'm holding down the right mouse button all I see for prompts on which button to use to select various menu options are numbers for buttons on my stick. How am I supposed to know which button on my stick is which?

Where is the user manual for this game?

Steam shows me with 12 hours played since the launch of this game and every single minute has been trying to get my controls working properly (trying various things and testing them to see if they worked).
