I made a couple videos to give new folks some practice ideas:
I would recommend not getting bogged down following a single player or trying to settle scores with whoever killed you last (at first) but rather shoot anything that moves or passes in front of your vision. Get used to selecting the target ahead, and if you see someone flying in a straight line across your vision, forget about the guy who's pulling immelmans and cobras and go for the low hanging fruit.
Also, resist the urge to go slow in, fast out on turns. It's great for cars, but when dogfighting, you have to be going slower than the guy in front of you to get behind him. Doesn't do you any good to pull a sweet turn and then go rocketing forward at full throttle, because you're most maneuverable with it in the middle (I'm leaving drifting aside, for this post, since it's not that easy for new folks at first). Low speeds when turning in a dogfight, unless you're speeding to catch up, or running from fire. There are always exceptions.
If you're low on health, break off and go for the resupply if you see one. It's better to miss out on a kill and live longer rather than to let yourself get killed because you won't break off.
Here's an X-wing video I made today, in case it gives anyone any ideas (like "don't crash"). You should be able to identify me doing some of the stuff I'm talking about (probably both good and bad, haha):
As the video indicates, learn to roll with your target, to avoid them disappearing below your nose.
