Rebel and Imperial fighters

Here's my issue, whenever I'm in a rebel fighter, the shield ability seems to do nothing against any attack, however when I'm fighting against a rebel fighter, no matter how many times I hit with lasers and rockets, their shield ability seems to make them invulnerable. Again, in an imperial ship my speed ability makes me go really fast as expected but does nothing in terms of evading lasers and rockets, but fighting against imperial fighters again they seem to become impossible to hit, even when I get direct hits! It's so annoying, I'm getting so frustrated. Someone please tell me the mechanics behind the abilities so I know how to use them properly because at the moment I tend to use them when a missile is incoming and, like I mentioned, they do nothing. Please share the secrets on how to use them properly, or is the game just programmed to not like me?

The rebel shields only protect against normal lasers, and you can still damage them with the Ion torpedoes shot from the TIE fighters, as long as they make contact.  The speed boost for the Imperials is a bit useless, especially in an attempt to not get hit by proton torpedoes.  To avoid these, you need to use one of the 3 "evasive maneuvers" at the right time to have the shot miss you.  Also, when you are aiming at either Rebel or Imperial ships, you need to hold the lock and stay steady until you see the crosshairs turn Yellow for you to get the best hits and do the most damage.
