Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order: Washed out HDR

Jedi Fallen Order's HDR looks absolutely horrible, no black, just greys, washed out. Does anyone else have the same problem? To me it seems even much worse than with other games that have the same problem (of which there are many)

I'm playing on:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 2600

Memory: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200

GPU: Geforce 2080ti (Driver Version 441.20)

Screen: Sony XF90 55 inch (Death Stranding and other well done HDR content looks stunning and I'm using the excact same settings as in those cases)

NVidia Control Panel settings are all set to default.

If this is an issue with the game's HDR itself, how do you prefer to play? Did you just turn off HDR? I started the game and got so pissed off, because of the nightmarish HDR implementation that I just turned it off again, and at the same time it seems to be a great game which I'd really like to play.

  • I don't think they've released any patches since February except one addressing a content-related bug in the game. This steam thread might help if you can scroll past all the drama. I don't have an HDR display, so I can't really try anything here, but it sounds like HDR is just not supported past whatever Windows has implemented. Also there are a couple of reshade mods over on Nexus Mods that supposedly give you better HDR support (or fake it, anyway). Worth looking into, but i haven't tried it. GL

@Xyntek01 As far as i was aware, HDR won't work with a DVI connection. Needs to be displayport 1.4 or above, or HDMI 2.0 or above. DVI cables can't carry the data rates required for 10 bit colour.

    Unless i've misunderstood it?
  • @vaux2 yes, you are right and thanks for the correction. I'm not using DVI, I'm using DP with 10 bit colors. DVI was my old monitor. Still HDR doesn't work correctly, I prefer to turn it off. I'm starting to think that is more of how the game is made. HDR in Sekiro of meh, in DMC5 sucks very hard, but in Forza Horizon 4 works great.
  • @CosmicF Definitely a problem on consoles. All I did to fix the color levels was turn off HDR on my TV and all color was restored to the game. I’d rather have color than have that grey HDR gameplay.

This is another one of those games with fake HDR. Developers for some reason just want the HDR label on their game no caring that fake HDR looks horrible compared to standard SDR. The only option to fix this is turning HDR off for the game.

  • Yeah it still looks terrible on PS5, as I played yesterday. The bright whites and highlights look okay on my HDR LG OLED . But all the black colors and pure black colors look gray and washed out. Changing the brightness slider in game did not help. It is very disappointing, as proper HDR would look amazing. Wish they would fix on all platforms.

Hopefully the new JEDI survivor game has better HDR implementation.
