Star Wars: Squadrons can not invite friends (PC - crossplay is on)

How is it that in Star Wars: Squadrons, I  can not invite friends (PC - crossplay is on).

I get the error message "crossplay must be turned on" and both me and friends have it on. This takes away the whole point of us purchasing the game!
