Star Wars: Squadrons on Steam not working

Star Wars: Squadrons on Steam won't function properly. In VR, the game is unplayable because of a pop-up that covers the entire screen and is not interactable, and in desktop mode, the pop-up stays a completely blank grey window except for the CLOSE button, and when closed, the game tells me that because I didn't log in, I can't access the games online functions. I have already tried the following:

  1. Restarting my computer(several times)
  2. Verifying game files
  3. Re-installing the game

Contacting EA support told me to again follow those steps, then when it didn't work, post on here. 

I tried launching it on my SteamDeck, and, guess what - it ALSO won't work on there. I've checked online and the only fix that seems to work for anyone is to link their Steam account to their EA account - but I've already done that, years ago in fact. I've played this game off and on for years and I don't understand why this is just happening now. I've never had a ban or have been in bad standing with any devs or on any platforms, so I know its not to do with that.

Included are two pictures from pancake mode(desktop) to showcase what I mean. 

Computers in question: 

SteamDeck
Desktop(specs following)

  • Ryzen 7 5700G
  • 32GB RAM
  • Radeon 6600XT

Any help is appreciated.

    EDIT: It makes me 'resend verification to email' every time the game launches, but doesn't take me to the blank screen, so thats still progress! Haven't tried VR yet, but I can just 'toggle VR' if need be

    OKAY! To those of you in this thread and those in the future, I took a shot in the dark and hoped it was just a graphical bug of some type - and it seems IT WAS. 

    Here's everything I've tried IN ORDER from start to finish so this can *maybe* be replicated by you guys. 


    1. Make a fresh install of the game(since my copy is on Steam, I re-installed the EA app just to double check that too)
    2. Ensure both EA and Steam overlays are disabled
    3. Reboot computer
    4. Launch the game in PANCAKE MODE(desktop only, no VR enabled for now)
    5. ASSUME when the grey box pops up that your text cursor is automatically in the email/username box
    6. Type in the email associated with your EA account
    7. Hit "TAB" on your keyboard
    8. Type your password
    9. Wait a moment until you hear the game try to do something
    10. Hit the "CLOSE" button in the top right of the game
    11. Wait for the rest of the boot sequence of the game to progress WITHOUT SKIPPING IT
    12. Wait for the "RECONNECT" button in the top right to appear on the main menu and click it
    13. The 2nd part of my login screen asking for me to send a verification code was there! Clicked the "Send Verification" button and then typed the code into my email

    This is not the first time I've tried to type anything on the screen, but it is the first time I haven't clicked on the grey screen before trying to type - so my guess is that I've clicked out of the hidden login boxes. Hopefully, this means that someone other than me can also get this to work! 

    Please let me know if this works for anyone else! If I hear back from one or two people that it works, I'll mark this response as the solution.

    @EA_Illium My assumption is this graphical bug has something to do with AMD based systems on the Steam platform, as those are the only two things that connect both my desktop PC and my Steamdeck. I realize I've not had these issues until getting AMD video hardware, hope that can help lead to a solution of some sort.

    For further updates - I have checked my Origin account, and my other Steam purchased EA games show up in my EA Games library with a small Steam badge in the top left corner, but Star Wars Squadrons isn't included with them. I own 3 EA Star Wars games: Star Wars Battlefront II, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Star Wars: Squadrons(which does not show on my account)

    How exactly am I supposed to fix this? I gifted a copy of the game on October 20th, 2020 to a friend to get them playing with me, I even preordered the game and have played through the campaign more than once - Why is this only now being an issue? What am I supposed to do to get it re-added so that I can go back to playing my game?

    I have exactly the same issue, EA tech support have not responded, only their chat service who say they are referring the issue to the techs. Steam support are unable to help.

    Hi @KramerThCourier @OldFaartQ 

    First to check do you use the Origin client or the EA app client? (recently Origin was replaced and this may be leading to issues)

    If you are on the EA app, can you confirm that Steam and EA app accounts are linked together?

    If so, launch both before launching SWS, if the issue continues try disabling the Steam and EA app overlays and check if this continues.

    I have already disabled both the Steam and EA app overlays. I have even tried uninstalling and re-installing the origin/EA app to make sure that wasn't the problem(I still call it Origin out of habit). My steam account is already linked to my EA account, and has been for years. The only thing I HAVEN'T done is completely wipe and re-install Windows because I no longer have access to my old key and can't afford to buy a whole new copy of Windows right now, nor do I want to rebuild my digital environment back from the ground up to play a game again. I don't understand what about this game has CHANGED since I've played in years prior that now changes whether or not the game can even open the EA login page

    I have also done all that as @KramerThCourier did @EA_Illium and nothing works, it still gets stuck at the blank EA verification screen. I wouldn't bother re loading windows, it's not that. I am sure it is an EA issue and possibly Steam VR? I'm running the beta's of both Steam products and it still happens. I have verified the game install and all is well. I even uninstalled SW Squadrons and re installed it. Same issue. I did one time get the the verification screen options appear, but no way of selecting any of them.

    Out of interest, I tried to run Battlefront II in Theatre VR mode as it is a PC game only and doesn't support VR, and was able to see the EA verification screen and requested verification and all worked and I was able to play the game in theatre mode. 

    Needless to say it didn't work with SW Squadrons, in either PC mode or VR mode, I just was presented the blank screen with close in the top right hand corner.

    This is really irritating!

    Not a SteamVR issue, sadly. It does it in pancake mode too with no success. Its a fault with the game itself my guess

    I'm having the exact same issue. I've seen a lot of people coming up with weird fixes like making sure OneDrive is open or just blindly typing in your email and password and hoping it works. Unfortunately, none of those have worked for me. I'm hoping EA fixes the issue, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

    would it be possible to get a DxDiag file and an EA app Error ID Number (the number) so we can pass this on to the team to be aware?
