some of those elevators only work 1 way though which sucks since they call it "shortcut" but there's only 1 terminal to use it so you still have to go all the way back around to use it so it's not really a "shortcut"
Most elevators once unlocked have a floor pad in the center that when stood on activates them. So you can call them to you with the terminal, or simply step on the pad to use it at either end. If it is labeled a shortcut when opened, it is exactly that, a way to skip areas to get to a wanted area. I haven't tried 100% of them, but I have used many and they they all worked this way.
