The "meaningful purpose" is to provide immersion and differentiation between crafts.
There is also a very practical meaningful purpose: You *need* a stationary cockpit in VR to avoid getting nauseous. Because you're physically stationary, the virtual world also needs a good stationary portion that agrees with your senses.
