Having just played the prologue in VR, I have to agree, but the target direction arrows at the edge of the field of view certainly help.
Years ago, I think it was in one of the incredible cross-section books, I saw something that suggested the TIEs use holographic emitters to expand the pilot's view of the battlespace. Something like that, or an implied AR vision element inside the helmet would certainly help, perhaps just a red outline or holographic "shadow" of nearby ships/rocks/etc. "visible" through the sides of the cockpit, due to holographic projectors, could retain the look of a limited FoV as depicted in the movies, but add to the pilot's awareness of the surrounding battlespace.
After all, some newer jets and tanks are trialing tech like this IRL.
