Uneven Matchmaking

First off, I absolutely love this game and thank you devs and community managers for your work towards making this game great. Over the past few weeks, I've had a lot of issues with uneven matchmaking. I just played a game where the other team had a significant higher number of advanced players than our team. Now I know levels aren't what determines skilled-based matchmaking but its a little unreasonable to me that I'm going up against people that have played the game for twice as many hours as me when I'm only Hero II. I mean they could all be in one party but it happens to me so frequently that I think the lobbies are just unfairly balanced

MY TEAM

AVG LVL: 63.2

Levels: 21, 161, 39, 33, 62

OTHER TEAM

AVG LVL: 248.2

Levels: 178, 299, 309, 315, 140

Lobby Rankings:

315 (R)

309 (R)

299 (R)

178 (R)

161 (E)

140 (R)

62 (E)

39 (E)

33 (E)

21 (E)

Just wanted to ask, are they at all looking at adjusting matchmaking or is this just how the game is going to be now so that loading times are reduced?

  • My personal opinion is, the playerbase isn't large enough for the Matchmaking system to pick players of the right level and rank to fight each other. So i think in the example you cited, the other team was a 5 stack group of friends. Your team on the other hand, where a bunch of randoms put together. Unfortunately, there wasn't another 5 stack queuing to pit that team against.

  • I have played games where you only fight with same level or playtime players, that games aren't perfect though and you are punished with a lot of points in ranking when the match is uneven. Many of that games are free and the rank/playtime is not valid as a player can have many accounts.

I have also played games where making an even match is a best effort case, where you can face a much stronger opponent, but the penalty for losing is very very low (this is the case for Squadrons). I don't think it is a problem, in the other system you are facing imbalance situations with strong penalty, that's even more frustrating. You should use these matches to learn about team compositions, equipment and strategies from better teams.

The main reason you may feel a match unfair is not related to the enemy skill because not all the people with lots of playtime is really good at playing. The real problem is the low level of the game understanding you and/or your team has. Usually it is the same problem as any MOBA, you are not in the correct place in the battlefield. This game has two phases, attack and defense, and you should figure out (looking at other players, studying tactics in forums or youtube, trying things in game teaming up with friends, learning from your rivals) which are the behaviour that is going to get you to a victory.

In mid ranks 8 from 10 players in the battle are unaware of what is happening around them. You should learn and team with friends to ensure your team is prepared for the win. The team is as strong as the weakest member, this is a cruel true in MOBAs, and these games with their stupid score systems doesn't help players to know when their kills/score have not contributed enough for the victory then they don't think they have to improve and blame the others.

Everytime I display the map and see one of my team going alone to attack the flagship against 5 enemies (without a specific ship build to do so) and gets killed instantly way before the Raider or the Corvette arrives I know it will be a difficult game, and this person could be high in the score chart if he does some non decisive kills.

So if you want more balance, learn to play better and team up with friends, you will win people with a level a lot higher and score a lot of raking points doing so.
