Valve Index Display / Color Problem in Squadrons

Product: Star Wars: Squadrons
Platform:Steam-PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? Okie135
Are you playing in VR? Yes
Which VR Platform are you using? Steam VR
Which part of the game is the issue happening in? Other
Please explain 'Other' Game Menu, Practice, Fleet AI solo battles
What were you doing when the bug occurred? Step by Step detail is helpful. 1. Start Steam 2. Start Steam VR 3. Start Star Wars Squadrons in VR Mode 4. Go to main menu 5. Go to Practice Mode 6. Launch starfighter in practice mode
Where did this issue occur? Please include menu name or in game location. Issue occurred at game start, cutscenes, main menu, practice menu, options menu, ship selection menu, and while flying.
When did this happen? (dd.mm.yy hh:mm) 15.10.20 19:00 Pacific Time <- most recent. Issue has persisted since launch on day 1
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
How severe is your issue? Can't play
What happens when the bug occurs? The monitor screen looks normal. The VR screen colors are wrong. All the menus are dark, the mouse is invisible. During startup cutscenes, only the red or orange glow from the fighter engines and blasters can be seen. In the game menu, Blue, Orange and Red are visible and everything else is dark. (It gives a cool old-school arcade lighting effect, but it's not very usable.) When in practice mode, at the hanger/ship selection start the colors look off. Green is washed out / dimmer, and everything has an orange tint. When flying in practice mode, the background nebula glows differently. The cockpit appears darker. With cooldown abilities like the repair droid, you can't differentiate the bars that show the cooldown status. The bars just show as a glowing white blob. Enemy fighters are impossible to see until they are in short range. They appear as a white glow, offset from the fighter's position. When in very close range, they can finally be seen but they are not as bright as normal.
What do you expect to see? Normal colors, my mouse, enemy fighters. I also expected to be able to read the menus and the status of cooldown abilities. Note: The monitor displays everything as normal, it's only the headset that is effected.
Which ship were you playing? If not applicable, just answer "no" or "none." no
What components were you using? Repair droid / N/A
Which customizations (if any) were you using? N/A

This is a really weird one.  I'd expect that we were missing a color channel if it weren't for the fact that green and blue still appear, just darker.  I've had 2 graphics driver updates since launch day, and am on the most recent driver. (NVIDIA driver 456.71)  Patches through Patch 1.2 have not fixed the issue.  Head tracking is normal, but with the darkness, colors, menu problems, and inability to see a mouse in the menu, the game is not practically playable in VR.

I've also tried starting Steam VR, and then selecting Squadrons from the VR menu.  No change.

Any tips?

Sony TV as monitor

  • I had the same problem. It was due to HDR being turned on.

    Try turning HDR off.

    Try turning HDR off.

  • Confirmed.

Tried it today, and turning HDR solves the problem.  Would be nice if there was a way to set HDR to be linked with VR off mode, so it would switch automatically.
The mouse was still invisible in VR mode, but I suppose at some point I need to set my joystick up for the menu options. XD

    Thanks for the help geimas5!

  • I have a very similar setup to you for my pc

    OCULUS RIFT S

    RTX2070

Sony Bravia TV for Monitor and secondary samsung 18.5 " display

The issue i had with Squadrons was the same with the graphics all having a red hue in VR mode but when you take off the VR headset and looked at the TV it showed normal colors.  The issue was the sony TV and that it supports HDR and somehow when this is being used to show what you are seeing in VR it messes up the graphics on the VR headset.  I changed the settings within Squadrons and set the display out to my Samsung 18.5" display (this is in VR mode) instead of my Sony TV and it disabled the HDR within squadrons and fixed the issue.  Now when i'm playing squadrons in VR you can see what i'm seeing on the non HDR display.  Hope I explained that well enough.
