What in variables factor into rank progression?

Good morning everyone,

Apologize if this has been asked before, but I do not see anything related to this when I search.

My question is, what in game actions contribute to your rank going up?  I reset my rank and took my 10 matches over, due to the rank bug.  I got placed barely into hotshot 1, at 1020 points.  My K/D ratio and win ratio are not great (0.5 & 0.6 respectively), as I only play when I have time.

From what I can tell, it seems that only 2 things contribute to your rank going up.  Your K/D ratio (or perhaps just your # of kills?) and, on a smaller scale, winning the match.  It seems rank is too heavily focused on kills.  Why doesn't capital ship damage count for more?

I have even noticed that, winning a game as the top player in the entire game, but doing only capital ship damage, STILL causes me to loose points.  At this point, unless I fully focus on my starfighter kills, my points go down.

Can someone shed some light on the current math a bit?  I really enjoy the Cap ship assault, but I feel like I am being forced to ship hunt if I want to rank up.  At this point, my points dropped to 900 and is staying there unless I kill players.

Thanks in advance!

  • The ranking criteria is a little weird at the moment. Nobody knows for sure what the criteria is to rank up or rank down.

I have situations where I was the top killer 22/8 with 15000 capital ship damage. I know 15000 is not much, but I play Interceptor not Bomber. I think this is decent considering my contribution in shooting down enemy squadrons. My team won and I was the top in my team. My rank stagnated (ie. 0% increase)

So if placing top and being the top killer in a winning team doesn't deserve a rank increase (at least in this specific case), I guess we can't be certain of anything for sure.

  • It's rather simple. Fly as best as you can, get a more than positive K/D/A ratio (like 15-6-3 plus some AI kills when they're in sight), have the highest dmg on cap ships of all players, ideal would be also if you solo some subsystems, be amongst the 3 top scorers if not the highest scoring player in the match.

If you hit all this criteria you will only lose a bit of rank when, the rest of your team consists of brain dead feeders ending with close to 20 deaths each and losing the game for you.

To gain rank- just pray to rng-sus that he might spare you from such "teammates" so your performance won't be completely irrelevant...

@Darth_GrumpyCat All players on the same team all get the same points change irrespective of score/ KDR etc. Play to win as a team not to come first on the score board.

@Flatulent_Rancor Private joker in the house, eh? That's the score I get by 100% playing for the win, I couldn't care less for kill highscores in fleet battles. This scores are just the result when you're the only one doing so and the 4 others just keep flying straight into death over and over again, randomly shooting some AI and that's it. And no, that's not a one-time bad experience, it's 50% of the matches I get on average. I go out there, do my effing job, defend our cruisers, our flagships, turn the tide every now and then, bomb the cap ships- just because the majority of my so called team doesn't. But since I can't be everywhere at once it usually ends up in a loss, punishing me for wasting my time with idiots. So spare me with rambo attitude accusations when the ranking algorithm is simply bs for a game that's focused around quick matches with random people. thank you.

Seems like a lot of matches are one person doing the work while others are just doing whatever passes into their sites.  Deliberately crashing into obstacles when they are about to get waxed (pilot error) or just doing weird random stuff instead of objectives.  Fleet battles has strong emphasis on team work, but rarely actually see it.  Rank system is rubbish at the moment, I've stopped looking at it because it only adds frustration.

@Darth_GrumpyCat You missed my point. I was merely pointing out that It doesn't matter what your individual score or KD etc is that will not affect the magnitude of the win or loss. That appears to be determined by how evenly matched the game thinks the two team are (but it dos seem to punish losses more than it rewards wins - have a look at the last post here https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/3-rank-increase-Really/td-p/9708328/page/2 ).
