There actually seem to be problems when the controller is not connected as "Player 1". My analog keyboard (WootingOne) was actually to blame because it is recognized as a controller. After I disconnected the keyboard and re-initiated the connection of the controller, it reconnected correctly and the game can be played normally.

This fixed it for me. i use an original wired xBox 360 controller. with my keyboard unplugged, i un- and replugged the controller and repeated. each time i replugget the controller it went up one player. just did it until it was player 1, reattached the keyboard now it works again.
you just need to be player 1

Genius!!! Yup, I have analogue switches on my KB so it's "a controller"
As soon as I pulled my KB and reconnected my XBone controller it worked perfectly! (Over bluetooth too)
