xbox one live battlefront

Is Xbox Live required to play Star Wars Battlefront.

I just bought Star Wars Battlefront for a new Xbox One. The guys at Gamestop insisted that the game will not run without an Xbox Live account that I had to buy. I'm skeptical about this -- if that's true, then why is the Xbox One even sold without Xbox Live.

    Xbox Live Gold is required to play online.  It is a yearly subscription (you can also do shorter periods, but it is more expensive per month).  Since this game is almost all online multiplayer, you pretty much need Xbox Live Gold.  This has been how it has worked for a long time with Xbox, so it is nothing new.

    This is not the only game that does this. In fact you cant setup an offline profile at all on xb1. Most games will not work at all unless you are online. Black opps 3 absolutely will not start without going online first eventhough it has an offline mode like multiplayer against bots playing local. The same goes for zombies and nightmares.
    It's absurd. There is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be able to play these games WITHOUT an online connection. Clearly its a collaboration between the various game makers and microsoft to make Microsoft more $ by forcing everyone to pay for xbox live if they want to play any games at all.
