Find a colorful nekko, e.g. purple or green, and leave it in that stable. Walk away, fast-travel or at least meditate, and make sure the nekko isn't following you. If it's still in the stable when Cal meditates, there should be a surprise when you return.
For the second, the droids are a bit buggy, but fast-traveling away and back, or quitting without saving, should help. If you're not willing to do that, then I don't know what to tell you.
