jedi survivor (on ps5) - controller remapping is a broken mess

Playing on PS5 with Dual Sense Wireless.

Have remapped controls to move a more Souls-like setup.

Some remaps collide with defaults elsewhere (e.g., R1 remapped to basic attack, now default "Focus" is unbound). There's no ability to combine buttons, AFAICT, even though the game indicates support in the "Controller Layout" UI (now shows Unbound + Triangle, Unbound + Square, etc.).

When I needed to "Focus," I would temporarily default back to R1, do it, then switch back R1 to basic attack (leaving "Focus," again, unbound).

Now I get to a battle in the tutorial that tells me to direct Bode (name?) to attack a Stormtrooper. Pressing R1 (that's what the screen tells me to do) does nothing. R1 is obviously not default mapped. Game is soft-locked. I can't get out of the tutorial hint pause.

There has to be combo button support in this game for controllers. There are too many controls and not enough buttons. Most controls, btw, are listed as "Locked."

Fix this. The default mapping is gross. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel.

  • This was my exact issue.

want to rebind attack to R1 but that creates a mess where it caused the game to lock up.

tried mapping focus to square, which unbound the companion combat assist.

it would be nice if focus could be bound to L3 + R3 or something.

  • @vinco83That's a sensible default, seeing as it's a "cinematic" action. There's even an L3 + R3 callout on the layout settings screen.

Just looking at the list of controls, most "locked" and/or "unbound," and the fact that there's already collision in the usable controls... they need to:

    a) show all the controls, even the ones you can't use right now, but at least you can map them (vs. being surprised by their activation and screwing up your, say, 3 mapsworth of muscle memory, because it now rearranges in your mind a set of related controls) and

    b) implement/enable multi-button modifier mapping and

    c) figure out what controls really don't collide, across control "sections."

  • Note: typing this on my phone, sorry for any misspellings

So I had this same issue, but it was mainly cuz I didn't know how focus worked. "Focus" skills are button combos, with your focus bind being the first part, and then something like companion attack or later abilities will be the second, so companion would be by default R1+Square, so when u rebind focus to say L2, the result is L2+Square.

Additionally, I also spent some time getting my controller mapped similarly to dark souls, and I've gotten everything to work (except for a few bugs, yes actual bugs, I'll talk about them in a second) here's what I did

    Attack-R1

    Parry/block-L1

    Jump-X

    Evade-O

    Special attack-R2

    Heal-Up

    Ascension cable-Square

    Interact/target-R3

    Map-touchpad

    Sprint-L3

    Stance1/2- left/right

    FOCUS-L3

    companion assist-square

    Push-triangle

    Pull-square

    BD-1 fire-square

Everything else was left to default, I am about 10 hoursish into the game and I've had no problems when it's not bugged (I've included some default in the list above just for clarity)

Now for the bugged parts (minor early game mechanical spoilers)

With these controls, you must restart your game for the ingame prompts (ei grapple) to show up with the right keybind.

If u rebind focus, when u attempt to tame a creature for the first time, it will display the correct button that u set it to, but it will not work. Hitting the original key bind (R1) will do nothing. You can fix this by rebinding focus to R1, hitting the prompt, then u can set it back. Very annoying hopefully it's patched soon

The most annoying bug of them all, and if I could get some signal boosting on this that would be great, is that if u rebind ur special, while u have blaster stance on, your blaster will still be bound to triangle, even if there's something else mapped, and R2 will do nothing. This is only an issue for the blaster stance, all other specials work just fine. There is no way to fix this right now, and what will happen is upon hitting triangle, it will either do ur bind or shoot and it's very inconsistent. This has made it so blaster is practically unplayable for me unless I use the default controls which is very unfortunate because that was the stance I was most excited about.

Hopefully this helped you out, i know those bugs are very inconvenient but I'm hoping theyll get patched soon. If someone does find a fix for the blaster stance PLEASE let me know

Exactly this! I was perfectly happy up until getting the blaster. Taming creatures was annoying but doable. This bug makes the blaster completely unusable.

  • Not sure if this will solve all desired configurations (and will be annoying if you frequent other games maybe) but for me I just simply wanted r1 to be attack - to do this with the least friction I have just gone into my PS5 accessibility settings and just remapped r1 to square and square to r1.

This solves the issue for me as everything remains bound and still works (note: in game prompts don’t reflect these changes but since mine is only 1 input swap I’ll just remember whenever it says to press square I need to press r1)

    hope this helps

  • @Diagz@Klayman55_4p6tuthanks for the suggestions. I did something similar to Klay's and, too, am still having to swap in/out certain controls, like BD-1 Activate and Ascension Cable -- and I'm not convinced these are collisions.

Really surprised they released with controller remapping in this poor state.

  • @ecc11718 Same issue for me as well, my tame is supposed to be L2 then I have to switch it to R1 to work. In blaster stance my shot should be L2 but I have to switch it to triangle to work out press push and pull in a weird way to shoot. And the force pull with 2 enemies doesn’t work with remapped controls.
  • Hopped on to check and make sure it wasn't just me.

I was hoping the recent patch would address this, but guess we'll have to wait for the next one. REALLY hope they get it sorted out though. I want (and mostly do) play with the controls (on PS5) mapped to olay like Soulsbounre games but the broken mess of a remapping system causes Taming and the blaster stance to just not work despite everything being mapped to a button and the game even giving screen prompts. Only way to get past those story segments is to temporarily remap the specific buttons back to their default setting, then Map back to my preferred scheme for fighting.

Fortunately I prefer Melee and wmdont use the blaster stance, but seriously frustrating.

How did you bind both Sprint and Focus to L3? It doesn't work for me. Also, do you think the Dualsense Pro would solve these issues? I've been considering buying one.
