Trying this now, wish me luck!
Also, any ideas on how to ensure the game's using my NVIDIA, and not the Intel?
Should be one of 2 ways , one may be just to right mouse click the game shortcut and there could be an option to select the performance video card
otherwise go into the Nvidia Control panel find swtor in the program list and select to use performance (Nvidia) card.
can also set generic by
From NVIDIA Control Panel:
3D Settings-> Manage 3D settings
The Tab "Preferred graphics processor " , select
High performance NVidia processor

Okay, here's what happened:
1) Changed my power settings to high performance, no issues there.
2) Installed the Intel Utility Driver updater, and apparently it found the most recent drivers I could use. I got halfway through the installation, when I was informed that the drivers I was about to install were OLDER versions than the ones my computer was currently using. I decided to pause the process and come back here.
3) Tried the game (for *s and giggles) using the NVIDIA GPU (turns out my integrated intel was default, whoops), and the game ALMOST worked. The loading screen flashed for 20 seconds before Black Screen of Doom came back.
HERE'S THE WEIRD PART. I Control-Alt-Delete'd the computer after the Black Screen of Doom to do another force close. When I selected Task Manager from the list of options, THE GAME LOADED, and took me to the character screen.
I don't know what the f*ck is going on here. I feel extremely stupid right now.

The black screen is tied to the video drivers, now the intel is the base for handing over to the NVidia card.
what occurs when you start up the game and get the black screen if you press ALT + Enter keys (swaps to window mode) does it come good on its own ?
