    some companions are guests so can leave 

    press n does that bring up any companions ?

That was it!!! I figured it was probably something simple. In the tutorial index, it mentions how to summon a companion, but doesn't say to press 'N" and I tried every button i could find on the HUD.....Thank you so much!
