Game locks up my computer with a black screen every time I quit, requires reboot

Hi. I resubscribed to SWTOR today but I've been having a pretty frustrating problem.

Every single time I exit the game, I am left with a black screen. Ctrl+Alt+Delete does nothing, Alt+F4 does nothing, Alt+Tab does nothing, waiting does nothing.

The only thing that 'works' is holding down the power button to my PC and turning it back on. I feel like this is probably not good for the health of my machine.

I guess I can play in Windowed Fullscreen, but my performance is worse in that mode.

My video drivers are up to date.

I can't say for certain that this is a related problem, but I can't alt+tab out of fullscreen mode when I'm in the middle of playing. I get the same black screen. I can hit alt+tab again and get back to the game, but if I do it a couple more times my system locks with the black screen.

Anyone have any idea as to what I can do to stop this from happening? Since I just resubbed, I'm changing my graphics settings around and alt+tabbing to wikis and such to try and get my new characters started. Having my entire computer lock up every time I do any of those things really kind of sucks.

Thanks for your time.

    Can you post a dxdiag per this link  and what antivirus are you using ?

    I have heard of others with this occurring and seems Windows 7 was a commonality

  • Hey Treadstone814,
    Ouch - that sounds pretty awful! Hmm. Are you seeing anything at all in the window when you load into SWTOR, or is it just completely black?
    I'd suggest running through a few of the more standard troubleshooting steps listed here to see if any of them resolve the issue, and then maybe consider contacting support for further assistance if needed. They'll know what to do 🙂
    Good luck!

  • Having the same problem since one month as well; I'm guessing it has something to do with the new engines/drivers they implemented, or maybe it's the NVIDIA drivers themselves, wouldn't be the first time they're causing problems like this... I still remember some months ago, when latest drivers caused SWTOR, and ONLY Swtor, to have flickering black spots all over characters.

    This problem doesn't happen with other games, except SWTOR; I did get some weird crash with Mass Effect 2 which resulted in another impossible-to-close black screen, so I'm guessing maybe it's all origin games, or something with their engines?

    Difference is, I can alt tab during the game with no problem; the issue appears only after closing it... it's like the screen freezes, but I know for sure computer is working, because I can bring up task manager and use my windows key to bring up menu (I restart from there everytime, there's no other workaround so far to get rid impossible-to-close black screen), I just can't keep em on top, black screen is always on top.

    Anyways, overly annoying, and nothing to be found on forums or googling; really hope someone would take notice of this and tell us poor soul who aren't programmers by trade how to solve this... pretty please with a cherry on top?

    @Nayra_Evhren

     Proxos posted an link how to do an dxdiag and post it here.

    Do that and we might be able to help you.

    Also now listed in the known issues sticky , this is being investigated back in the studio

    However this is just on closing of the game and just occured with 5.0

    If you have had this issue for months then you have a different issue

  • Well, latest game patch fixed this for me; as for the other problems, apparently NVIDIA released a new drivers version that fixed those too, so everything works perfectly again now 🙂

    Morning all..

    I have seen this issue, it usually happens when a resolution setting is incorrect.

    You will likely have more then 2 resolution settings to running and the conflict arises as it comes out of the game..... but it doesn't happen with my other games???... Swtor's greedier than most.

    Yes you have your Games Resolution Settings which are found in the Client_Settings.cfg file..

    WindowX = 0
    WindowY = 0

    NativeHeight = 1080 (This should be your screens 'native resolution')
    NativeWidth = 1920 (This should be your screens 'native resolution')

    Height = 1080 (This should be your screens 'native resolution')
    Width = 1920 (This should be your screens 'native resolution')

    RefreshRate = 60 (This should be your screens 'native refresh' rate ideally)
    D3DFullScreen = false  (*for now)
    FullScreen = false (*for now)

    And Yes you have your Windows settings which 'should' be set up correctly, if you have multiple monitors then they need to be set up correctly too... everything should match.

    Now here is something that can be missed.. and that is if your PC has a built in GPU... it will have the software installed to handle that GPU.. like the one from Intel...

    Alot of CPU's have a built in GPU on the chip, laptops more so.

    If your PC has a dedicated non CPU, GPU.... then you have to spend a few extra moments ensuring that this is all set up correctly

    Is the correct Video Card/GPU set as Default.. do they have the correct resolutions and settings for the screens...

        !!! ARE THEY ALL THEY SAME ON ALL PROGRAMS !!!

    More coffee required... sing out if you have issues or even if you make it further down the road then before.
