There could be several reasons such as on a different server for instance. So there you would need to go to the server list and check other servers.
Other thing is that they are associated to a different login then what you used. You can. Is the forgot your Display Name feature and try different emails to see if they are on another account.
If you still can't find them, you would need to call customer service to have them track them down or find out what happened.
