Were you a subscriber or using a 7 day referral access at the time? Companion customization is locked for F2P unless you are either a subscriber or you have unlocked the option by purchasing the unlock from the cartel market for that character or the whole account. Each one has a different cost or you may be able to find it available for purchase on the in-game GTN.
