When I log into SWTOR Character, it takes me back to server selection screen?

Hello! This is my first time using this forum, so please excuse me if this is in the wrong place.

When I recently tried to log into one of my SWTOR Characters, it booted me back to the server selection screen after fully loading. I could still hear the music of the planet I had tried logging into (Dromund Kaas) yet I was starting at the server selection screen.

If that doesn't make sense, basically, these were my steps.

1.) Log in.

2.) Select a character.

--> I selected my Sith Sorcerer.

3.) Wait as the "Loading character" screen came.

4.) Screen goes black (sort of how it goes when you first load in). Can hear planetary music playing.

5.) The server selection menu/screen shows up instead.

--> I am able to go back and select a character, but the same process repeats itself.

I am not sure what else to do at this point. I do not believe it is an issue with my internet. I tried both the Satele Shan server and Star Forge server. I have tried different characters, not just the same one. I have also tried logging in and out of the game, restarting my computer, and repairing my installation from the launcher.

My next thought was possibly uninstalling and reinstalling the game to see if that would work, however, I wanted to get other people's thoughts on the matter. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thank you for any help you can provide!

  • I am sorry for the late reply. I have been busy for the past week and did not have much of a chance to get onto the game to test out the changes.

When I did eventually log on and seriously play for a few hours, I can report that there were no interruptions with the connection. This was after I followed what @proxos666 had said and checked the cable that connected my computer to the wall. In addition, I rebooted my internet and checked the wire and it seemed to work.

Since the few times I've played it, I did not run into any serious problems with connection, I am going to mark this thread as solved. However, just in case anybody else is having this problem (and this thread is found in the future -- because trust me, I've been there looking at old threads for this sort of stuff), I'll just detail what I did / others suggested on this final post.

When I couldn't literally log onto my character AT ALL:

    • I came here and was able to get in touch with an admin to reset my character onto the Fleet. [Worked]
    • Uninstalled / Reinstalled SWTOR [Moderate Success]
    • Updated launcher / fix files. [Moderate Success]
    • Restarted my computer/game [Low Success]

When I would randomly lose connection:

    • Rebooted / restarted internet. [Worked]
    • Checked my ethernet cable and made sure it was securely plugged in. [Worked]
    • Updated my NIVIDA Drivers.  [Moderate Success]

Anything else I missed would be in the thread.

Anyway, thank you to all that helped. I guess if this problem arises again or I have another question, I will be in contact with you all again.

There is a newer Nvidia Driver at this link

Have you ever adjusted the currency on the system just in case of an obscure issue, although the symptoms do not match fully just want to check to be certain.

Press the Windows key and select settings

Go into Time and language, select region and language on the left

Click additional date, time & regional settings

Under region click the link for change date, time and number formats

Click additional settings at the bottom

Click either reset , or ensure . is decimal symbol and , is digit grouping symbol

Want currency to display as $ 1,000.00  and not as $ 1.000,00

  • Update: Yesterday and today, I spent a few solid hours testing out to see if there was anything I could do. I updated my Nivida drivers as @proxos666 suggested, as well as go through my anti-virus software a second time to make sure there was nothing that was blocking the game.

For the most part, it seems to have worked. I will occasionally still get kicked off randomly, but I am able to select the server and just log back into my character if it happens. So at any rate, I think I can survive doing just that for a bit of time. It is an annoyance, but at least I can actually load into my characters this time and play. So I am grateful to everyone who has helped thus far.

Update 2: As I am writing this now, I just got kicked off my character again. However, this time, when I was kicked, everything on the server selection screen was blank. No servers were displayed or anything. (Image to be attached to post). So, I closed the game and relaunched it and I was able to log back in fine and everything

    .

Currently, I haven't been kicked back to the server selection screen since that has happened, so I cannot yet confirm if that is the new screen I see whenever I am kicked.

However, if anyone is still willing to help me potentially solve this problem, it would be appreciated once again. If not, I am currently okay with having to log out / log back in every time it happens. (It is just an extra hassle/step when I do) I get that this seems to be a decently rare case.

    Thanks!

If your currently playing wireless can, are you able to connect directly to the modem by ethernet cable and see if it still occurs ?

Also what Antivirus and Firewall are you using ?

  • @proxos666

I'm usually plugged into the wall and I believe I have been when I played SWTOR. Unless I'm momentarily losing connection for a split second?

And the antivirus I'm using is "Avast!"

Maybe switch the lead out for a different one and connect directly to the modem and test if possible, it would only take microsecond break for the drop to occur in-game

If you're still having issues with disconnections and an empty server list, can you do a TraceRoute and PathPing to gamepad.swtor.com and paste the results here? You can also use www.pingplotter.com for the tests, whichever is more convenient.
