Boss Darth Nihilus force drain in sith raid phase 1?

I don't know if this is a bug or not but his force drain agains protection even when the attack misses.

Example he attacks a team of Jedi with no debuffs and all have foresight. He gains a ton of purple protection.

Is this a bug or me just misreading something?
