This. Tarkin needs multiple ships applying debuffs to work well.
- Vader - Permanent unavoidable irresistible target locks. Without him, consider using a different fleet commander.
- FOTP - At max, moves twice as fast as almost any other ship, 80% chance to apply target lock on basic, and no cooldown on 2nd strongest single target ability in ships.
- Boba - A solid attacker with decent target lock chance on his basic and an AOE built around target locks.
- Fives - Better as a reinforcement in this fleet imho, because you won't be using his AOE until later in the fight. You can use him up front if you want, though.
- Biggs - With all the target locks, he should be taunting for days.
- Sun Fac - Nice tank to have waiting in reinforcements, only other self taunt (to replace Biggs when he dies).
There are definitely ways to utilize Tarkin for devastating results. Unfortunately, right now without Vader he is severely limited. It doesn't help that FOTP's unique is currently broken, so he's not moving twice as fast like he should be (putting another dampener on damage output).
Now I won't sue if you are wrong but in your experienced opinion who leads the capital ship race at the moment (if you could have any ship) and what would your 7/8 ships be. So im possibly asking is what are you working towards!?

At the moment? Probably Mace, just because all of the ships necessary to his core synergy are available to the public (Plo/JC/Ahsoka/Rex+ CS or Fives, as starting lineup). I mean they designed him to have the most synergy coming out of the gate, as evidenced by 6 ships of 19 (at launch) being Republic.
Last December when I first started playing, the meta was Barriss+Lumi+Dooku - heal faster than your opponent can damage you, and run out the clock on Dooku-pong. As new characters were introduced, power creep ensued (it's inevitable) and healers started fading out in favor of speed damage meta.
Ships are starting out with a heavy tank/heal focus and an attempt to stall on defense in order to hold your rank. While this is 110% speculation, I think ships meta will eventually head down the same path of focusing on speed and damage (particularly AOE damage). With that in mind, I am currently pursuing a Tarkin-based fleet that, given the right ships (chiefly Vader, if I can ever get him), should be able to kill almost every enemy ship (barring tanks) by the start of round 2. But it's just a theorycraft right now.
