Not counting ship GP is just stupid. I always had the highest ship GP (usually by far) and 90% of my opponent’s were easy. It’s all about having the right teams, the right zetas and knowing how to counter every team.
Just because you do not like it doesn't make it stupid. Down below 2 million total GP, facing opponents with up to 50% more usable GP in squad-only GAs, things look a little different. In that scenario it takes more than simply knowing the right teams.

Now I am stuck fighting people with up to 300k less GP than me because some cry babies that are bad complained about that. They will prolly know find a new thing to complain because they will still lose
You are fighting opponents with the same amount of usable GP.
I was one of the most vocal critics of matching on total GP for squad-only. Facing opponents with up to 50% more usable GP over and over it was very clear that the situation was unbalanced.
The fact that I have 4 GA bracket wins, 2 of them squad-only, simply means that I was mis-matched on skill as well as GP. When I faced comparablly skilled opponents (by modding & arena ranks), my chances of victory with such a large GP imbalance were virtually 0. GA is supposed to be a test of skill not who has the most usable GP.
Edit: What you need is not fleet GP adding back in but a skill factor of some kind added to the matchmaker.
