GAC auto fill does random now or...?
I guess they did this on purpose but I really don't get why

what? no they just take the top chars and fill them all in. this is to reward your opponent by giving them a full defense to attack and get banners and feats done, as opposed to leaving them all empty. They (CG) do it from the top down bc altho there can be hard teams to beat your opponent will get more banners than you will be able to bc all of your top toons are on D, making your attacking options much more limited and weaker.
