It has been analyzed by several people that the difficulty of GW depends on the aggregate power of your top 5 characters in your roster (and a dev more or less confirmed this, saying it was not really wrong). If zeta teams appear, elsewhere than on node 12, it means that your top 5 has the strength to fight them (just not the stamina to do 4 Arena-like matches in a row).
If you keep characters in the 6-20 within a reasonable margin of power to your top 5 (and not any characters, some are less pertinent than others), you don't depend as much of super characters like Nihilus.
Speaking of Chaze, it's also a combo that is well known to be strong, and newer players field them way sooner than we used too. This may also explain their ubiquity. I checked the meta report earlier today, and Chaze feature in a good quarter of all 1-100 squads, and nearly half of the 1-10 squads.
