Grand Arena Loot

This may have been discussed elsewhere, but why does it seem the structure of the grand arena make it a disadvantage to have a higher GP. In Territorial Wars, an increase in overall GP means the loot will be increased even if you lose. In grand arena, it seems vastly easier and thus more rewarding if you are capable of keeping your GP lower. I would think the better rewards should go to the long time players who have consistently invested both time and money into this game.
